Need something to get you thinking about our Halloween flight this year? The Third Annual Witch Ride video for 2014 is finally finished and Witches, let me just say, we cast quite the spell!
Thank you all that attended and helped make it such a fun day! A special thank you to Witch Jane Ratcliffe for penning the “Witches of Delray” poem after our flight that morning. We LOVE your enthusiasm and our video would not have been complete without it!
I hope you have all been well since our Halloween flight! I can’t begin to express what an honor and thrill it was to lead you around our beloved Delray Beach. It was wonderful to ride with you, new friends and old. Thank you all for attending.
We raised a total of $1547.00 for the Achievement Center for Children and Families. We were 40 riders strong and five lovely behind the scenes witches that we couldn’t have done it without! Our coven more than doubled in number this year! Look what we witches can do when we put our hats together!
With the Holiday season upon us I know you are probably in a flurry of activity. In an effort to become a better, bigger coven I would like to ask you to please take a moment to fill out an anonymous survey about your experience with the Witches of Delray. It’s a quick 10 question survey, with space for comments. We love feedback, we love ideas and we love participation so if you would like to get involved with the down and dirty planning of next year’s ride we’d love to know that too!
If you rode with us or otherwise participated but didn’t get your survey link via email or Facebook, please use the contact form on this web site to request a link to the survey.
We’re editing all the video from this year’s ride including the Go Pro “Broom cam” footage and we hope to have that finished soon. If you have videos or pictures from this year’s ride that you would like featured on the Witches of Delray website or Facebook page, please use the contact form to get in touch with me. We’re updating all that information and would love to include your favorite shots.
Wishing you, your families, and your familiars a happy, healthy holiday season.
Arrival time: Witches must arrive at the rail road lot behind Johnny Browns on Atlantic Avenue no later than 7am. We have Ren of Ren Dittfield Photography donating his time to take pictures of our take off. He asks that you arrive by 6:45am if you want to be in these pictures. I need to stress, he is only available for our early morning pictures. We have other people staged throughout the route so we can get some good pictures of our flight, so if you are not able to arrive till 7 am that’s okay. Anyone who is able to come a little earlier is encouraged to do so to take advantage of Ren’s generous offer. Take off is at 7:30 am sharp so that we can stay on schedule for our stop at the Achievement Center at around 8:30, and brunch at Luna Rosa at around 9:45. If you have not paid your rider donation of $20 or signed your waiver please try to arrive as early as possible.
I rode the route again this morning and it was windy so strap those hats on tight. Secure your bike decorations. We don’t stop for wardrobe malfunctions.
If for some reason you need to leave the ride, you cannot rejoin while we are in route. You can meet us at Luna Rosa for brunch. We need to stay together as a group to make sure we have the best visual impact on our ride and above all, stay safe. We will be safe in numbers if we stay together. We have catch up stops throughout the route to ensure that we are able to ride as a group. We have several witches with two way radios riding with us. If you have an emergency and need to leave the ride please let one of them know. We have someone available with a bike rack on their vehicle to pick you up and take you to safety.
There is no real way to tell how long it will take all of us together to cover the route. If for some reason we are running behind we will skip the loop around Spady Elementary. Luna Rosa is holding tables for us so we need to stay on schedule so we are not holding up others. Don’t forget to bring cash or a credit card to pay for your meal at Luna Rosa.
Please check this web site for additional details as all my previous emails are on the web site along with a route map.
Looks like we are going to have incredible weather for our flight witches! I can’t wait to see your costumes, your bikes and your beautiful Halloween smiles in the morning. No staying up late hitting the brew tonight witches…..tomorrow we ride!
I love ya with all my dried up, black, little heart,
Friday October 31, 2014. We will begin lining up and getting final instructions at 7:15 and will begin our ride sharply at 7:30. Please review postings below for more up-to-the-minute details.
Route Start / Parking
Route starts at the Delray Beach downtown “Railroad Lot”. This lot offers plenty of free parking to accommodate over 100 vehicles. (Directions from I-95: Take Atlantic Avenue heading east to Swinton Blvd. Turn left onto Swinton heading north for 1 block to NE 1st street. Turn right onto NE 1st street heading east. Go three blocks and cross the railroad tracks. The parking lot entrance is the first right immediately after the railroad tracks.
T-35 hours till flight Witches! Excited yet? I can hardly contain myself!
Thrilling new details!
The charming professionals from Ren Dittfield Photography have graciously offered to be on hand to cover our take off Friday morning! We’re bound to look our best with Ren and his lovely assistant there to make sure the moment is captured perfectly!
Come a little early to make sure we get your best side! Arrival time is 7:00 am but if you want to be in our group photo before take off Ren has asked that you arrive by 6:45. Start location is at the railroad lot behind Johnny Browns.
Please look over this website to make sure you don’t miss any important details, and feel free to contact me with any questions.
Friday morning we’re gonna take this town by storm…Like a Kansas tornado!
The route is marked with orange, purple and blue arrows. Orange arrows indicate we will be riding in the streets. This means the pace will be a bit quicker to keep up with traffic.
Purple arrows indicate when we will be riding on sidewalks and following pedestrian rules. This is a leisurely ride witches. Riding on sidewalks comes with a lot of surprises; cars pulling out or turning into side streets, pedestrians, other bicyclists and sometimes even yard debris.
The Blue arrows indicate where the witches who do not want to ride with Alpha to brunch can leave the ride and return to their cars. Witches taking their cars with their brooms tucked securely away to Luna Rosa will need to bring quarters to park. It’s $1.50 an hour.
Anything marked with a “witch hat” is a scheduled stop for witches to catch up. We have several of these throughout the route so that we can all stay together.
We have our official water stop at the Achievement Center; the timing on this should be about 8:30 am. This is a good time to say that costumes should be G, PG rated max. We will be visiting while the center has parents dropping off their children. Costumes should be family friendly. Nothing too scary or provocative.
Points to remember:
Arrive at 7 am October 31, 2014 at the railroad parking lot behind Johnny Browns
Make sure your hat is strapped on tight.
All bike decorations are secured
No heels or long costumes that may get caught in the bike.
If you have not already registered the rider donation is $20 and must be paid with your waiver signed to ride.
4 days till we ride Witches and it’s all in the details!
All Witches should arrive at the Railroad lot behind Johnny Brown’s on Atlantic Avenue no later than 7:00 am. Even if you have already registered we need you there to get in line and ready for flight, as well as receive route information and instructions.
The ride should take approximately 90 minutes. This is giving us plenty of “witch catch up spots” So we can stay together…. Safety in numbers witches. We have a very official water stop scheduled for 8:30 am at the Achievement Center with Water Witch Barbara Blanid James and her lovely WWIT (Water Witch in training) Lynn Korp. We are expected at Café Luna Rosa between 9:30 and 10 am for our well earned brunch. The staff at Luna Rosa love witches, and have graciously agreed to give us all separate checks so we can be on our way as we need to be. Please remember to bring cash or a credit card with you to Luna Rosa. Brunch is not included in your rider donation.
If you choose to ride to Luna Rosa as a group instead of returning to the railroad lot to get your vehicle, you will be on your own to ride back to your car. The ride officially ends at Luna Rosa and there will be no Alpha Witch escort from that time on.
Fantastic turnout for our Witches Brew Happy Hour fundraiser Friday at Tim Finnegans Irish Pub!! We raised more than $1000.00 for the Achievement Center, Signed up 23 riders, collected a dozen books and had a wicked good time! We’re breaking records already this year witches! Thank you all who came out and supported the Witches of Delray and the Achievement Center!
Witch Ride Arrival Time:
This is important witches. Arrive by 7:00am at the Railroad lot behind Johnny Brown’s on Atlantic Ave. We take flight at 7:30 am sharp. To get the best exposure on our route, and remain on time for brunch at Luna Rosa this is important. We cannot wait for others to arrive. If you are not in line with waiver signed and money paid at 7:30 am we will have to leave you behind and you can catch up with us at brunch… Set your alarms, cast a spell if you have to…but don’t be late…..I know, I’m a hard ass witch sometimes.
Please take a moment to look over the updated route map on our web site HERE. We will be riding a combination of streets and sidewalks throughout the route. We will be walking our bikes at times and riding others. This is all listed on the route map, as well as markers that show where we will have “witch catch up spots.” Our goal is to stay together, be safe, and cast a “good witch” spell over Delray Beach.
Keep it simple witches, we can’t be stopping for wardrobe malfunctions. So strap it down, tie it on, do what you gotta do! Heels are not recommended for riders. One of our witches from Friday night went to George’s Shoe Repair on 4th street and got a pair of grommets installed on her hat for $8.00. Now she can use any ribbon to tie her hat down so it doesn’t blow away in flight! Awesome idea Anita Holland!! Thanks’ for sharing. Check it out witches if you need a hat solution!
Brunch is not included in your donation so make sure and bring some cash or a credit card to pay for your meal.
All details are at witchesofdelray.org. We will be sending out daily emails from now till we ride….please contact me if you have any questions or concerns before the ride.

Greeting Witches! It is time for your weekly updates from Alpha.
Temps are falling, fall is in the air, and it’s making me very antsy to take flight!
First off, a big “thank you” to Abbey Goodwin and all the staff for last night’s tour of The Achievement Center for Children and Families. What a treat be able to see firsthand all the wonderful services you provide to our community. The witches and I are honored to be a part of such an amazing organization. Thank you for all you do for Delray Beach!

Hope everyone is getting their costumes in order and their brooms tuned up.
I just wanted to touch base with everyone and share a wonderful event that is happening this Sunday October 12th. The Delray Beach Bicycle Club is having a Bicycle Safety Ride departing at 8 a.m. from Old School Square. This is a 1 hour ride in downtown Delray, designed to educate riders on traffic rules and safety practices. I am planning on riding. Who will join me for a practice run? Please check out all the information at http://delraybeachbikeclub.com/delray-beach-bicycle-safety-ride. If you are new to riding, please consider attending. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a feel for the roads, and your bike before the big day.
Also, next Wednesday October 15th at 4 p.m. is our tour of the Achievement Center. Come see firsthand where the money we donate goes and check out all the wonderful programs they provide for Delray’s most needy families. We may have an impromptu happy hour gathering afterwards if we have enough witches in attendance.
I rode our route again this past Monday morning (10/6/2014). I went about 15 minutes later than last week, and most of the school drop offs were winding down. I think we will need to meet around 6:45 and take flight at 7:15 sharp. Eeeek! That’s early! But if anyone can handle being early to rise, it’s us witches!
We are still accepting donations for our Witches Brew Happy Hour fundraiser at Tim Finnegan’s Irish pub October 24th. There will be raffles, silent auction, and prize drawings. If you would like to donate an item or service please contact me at via the “Contact” page on this web site.
Looks like our numbers are growing! We’re shaping up to be the best coven South Florida has ever seen!
The route has changed from last year. If you felt like we rode way more than 5 miles last year, it’s because we did. Our route last year was over 10-1/2 miles (we measured it) and didn’t even include Atlantic Avenue!
This year we will be parking in a new centralized location riding 7-1/4 miles (with a 5-1/2 mile option) and including parts of Swinton and Atlantic Avenue which has not been included on previous routes. This should really boost our exposure. We will still ride past several schools on our way, and stop at the Achievement Center to drop off all the money we have raised.
I am personally riding this route every week at the same time of the morning we will be riding for the next month so I can get a better idea of traffic and construction. Visit the new web site at http://WitchesOfDelray.com for a downloadable PDF route map and description.
This would be a good time to mention that we will only be using bikes in this year’s ride, and roller blades will not be allowed. The roads we ride on are too uneven and the traffic is hairy in a few spots. Our goal is to stay together and create a spectacle as much as possible and above all be safe so only bikes as brooms this year. Richwagen’s Bike and Sport rents bikes if you need one to participate. Here is a link to their site for information and current rates. http://delraybeachbicycles.com/rates/.
